The Lux Center works to strengthen the living relationship between Catholics and the Jewish people by equipping seminarians with tools and knowledge they need to present an accurate understanding of Judaism, promote a positive understanding of Catholic-Jewish relations, and engage in interreligious activities in their congregations after ordination. We also offer programs, lectures, and study materials to promote understanding and dialogue among scholars, with the people of southeastern Wisconsin, and beyond.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Director of the Lux Center
Department: Student Services and Special Projects
Supervisor: Vice President of Student Services & Special Projects

POSITION GOAL
Dedicated to furthering Catholic-Jewish relations, the Director of the Lux Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies will support educational programs that equip students at Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology (SHSST) and its community with:
  • Understanding of the Jewish roots of their own Christian tradition.
  • Experiences that enable engagement in interreligious activities in their congregations after ordination.
  • Appreciation for religious thought and practices of contemporary Judaism that transcends age old stereotypes and prejudices.
  • Commitment to strengthening the living relationship between Catholics and the Jewish people.
  • Activities to promote Catholic-Jewish understanding, dialogue among scholars and with general public.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Vice President of Student Services & Special Projects, the Director of the Lux Center is a full-time employee of SHSST responsible for the direction and management of the Lux Center’s programming and operations and for the education of seminary students about Catholic-Jewish relations and interreligious studies.

SKILLS AND EDUCATIONAL CREDENTIALS
  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy, Jewish and/or Theological Studies or other related field necessary to fulfill the duties of the position.
  • Preferred: A Master’s Degree in Rabbinical or Ministerial Degree in Catholic Theology, Jewish Studies, or a related field.
  • Excellent presentation and event organizational skills.
  • Effective administrative skills.
  • Ability to organize and follow up grant-writing and fundraising efforts.
POSITION SPECIFICS
  • Represents the public face of the Lux Center with the general public
  • Oversees and implements the design of the Lux Center’s Programming to meet the formational needs of seminarians, students, faculty and staff, as well as education for the public in the area of Catholic-Jewish relations, and, more generally, interreligious dialogue.
  • Holds a support role for faculty in the areas of Catholic-Jewish relations and, more broadly, interreligious understanding.
  • Creates and implements the Lux Center’s strategic plan and marketing.
  • Database management.
  • Maintains appropriate and sufficient communication with SHSST administrative leadership, the Lux Center Governing Board, Advisory Board, and its committees, related national and local organizations, and members of the public.
  • Submits required reports and attends assigned meetings and events.
  • Attends all Faculty Council meetings.
  • Attends all weekly Rector’s Cabinet meetings.
